Using the legacy file manager

Please refer to our video tutorial: Using the file manager.

To use the file manager in cPanel:

  1. Log into cPanel.
  2. Click the File Manager icon.
  3. By default, the file manager will open to your Easiest Web Hosting account's home directory. Click the small folder icon beside public_html, where the files for your website are stored.
  4. If you want to create a new directory:
    1. Click the Create New Folder link.
    2. Enter a name for the directory.
    3. Click the Create button.
  5. If you want to rename a directory:
    1. Click the directory name.
    2. Click the Rename this folder link.
    3. Enter the new name.
    4. Click the Rename button.
  6. By clicking the directory name, you can also delete the directory, change permissions on the directory, move the directory or copy the directory.
  7. To upload files to your website, make sure you are in your public_html directory or one of its subdirectories and click the Upload file(s) link.
  8. Click the Browse... button.
  9. Select a file and click the Open button.
  10. Repeat the process for additional files.
  11. If there are any files in the directory that are named the same as the files we are uploading, checking the "Overwrite existing files:" option will automatically overwrite (replace) them.
  12. Click the Upload button.
  13. If you want to view the files you have uploaded:
    1. Click the filename (you may have to scroll down and look for it).
    2. Click the Show File Contents link.
  14. By clicking the filename, you can also delete the file, change permissions on the file, rename the file, copy the file, or move the file.
  15. When deleting a file or directory, the file manager automatically moves the contents to the trash so that it can be restored if it was accidentally deleted. To empty the trash and delete items permanently, click the Trash icon.
  16. Some files (such as scripts) can be edited directly in the file manager. To edit files:
    1. Click the filename.
    2. Click the Edit File link.
    3. Make changes as necessary.
    4. You may wish to change the filename when you save your changes, to preserve the original file.
    5. Click the Save button.
    6. Close the window.
  17. To see new files, you may need to refresh your window.

Congratulations! You now know how to use the file manager.
